Memphis, Tennessee’s Preferred Adolescent Inpatient Treatment Program

Crestwyn Behavioral Health’s adolescent inpatient program is designed to care for adolescents who are struggling with mental health concerns and substance use disorders. Our program serves adolescents ages 1217, though we are able to care for certain 10- and 11-year-olds depending on clinical appropriateness. During inpatient treatment, which usually lasts 1014 days, adolescents live at our hospital while receiving individual therapy, group therapy, and other scheduled services each day.

Learn More About our Adolescent Inpatient Program

Care in our adolescent inpatient program begins with the admissions process. Parents, guardians, or other loved ones can contact a member of our admissions team to schedule an appointment for an assessment, though we also offer walk-in assessments. The assessment counselor conducts a brief screening conversation to collect demographic and insurance information, and they review the individual’s clinical history and discuss their needs. The assessment counselor then brings this information to the psychiatrist, who makes a final determination of acceptance and a recommendation for a level of care, such as inpatient care.

Types of Treatment

The clinical team that leads the adolescent inpatient program includes board-certified psychiatrists, counselors, nurses, social workers, activity therapists, and teachers. Our adolescent inpatient staff members are passionate about helping adolescents manage the symptoms of mental health disorders, overcome substance abuse, and lay a foundation for lifelong healing. We teach cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and motivational interviewing, as well as other empirically supported interventions.

Our clinical team works closely with each young person to develop a care plan that reflects their unique strengths, goals, and therapeutic needs. We do not subscribe to a one-size-fits-all style of treatment, so no two adolescents’ care plans are the same. We offer a number of interventions that may be part of an adolescent’s treatment plan, including the following:

Individual therapy occurs daily or as needed and is an opportunity for adolescents to meet one-on-one with one of our highly trained counselors to process concerns relevant to their care. Many adolescents use this time to explore certain areas of personal growth, to discuss things they may not feel comfortable talking about in groups, and to receive support and encouragement as they progress on their journey toward better mental health.

Group therapy is the backbone of care at Crestwyn. During groups, adolescents can practice mental health and relational skills, build relationships with their peers, learn about topics related to mental health, and share in their growth journeys. Groups meet multiple times per day and encompass a variety of types and topics, including the following:

  • Community
  • Psychoeducation
  • Anger management
  • Goal setting
  • Medication support
  • Suicide prevention
  • Recovery skills
  • Healthy relationships

Family therapy at Crestwyn is based on the recognition that mental illness and substance abuse do not just affect the individual who has the condition but in fact affect their entire family and social sphere. We provide family therapy sessions based on the patient’s need and the family’s ability to participate in such sessions.

Medication management services are provided for adolescents who can benefit from taking medication as part of their care plan. Adolescents meet with a psychiatrist at least once per day and receive day-to-day medication administration and monitoring from our nurses and nurse practitioners.

Tutoring services at Crestwyn are provided because we believe that adolescents should not have to choose between academic progress and mental well-being. During their time with us, adolescents have time scheduled for education and tutoring at least twice per day to ensure that they are able to keep up with their studies and do not fall behind academically.
